Welcome to the Division of Movement Disorders!

Division of Movement Disorders logo Columbia University Medical Center has one of the longest traditions of research, education, and patient care in Parkinson's disease (PD) and other movement disorders such as dystonia, tremors, ataxia, chorea, Tourette syndrome and myoclonus in the United States. Dr. Lewis Doshay established a Parkinson's Disease Clinic in the 1940's and carried out extensive trials on the use of synthetic anticholinergics to treat the disease. After his retirement, the directorship of the Clinic passed to Dr. Melvin Yahr in 1964. With his trainee, Dr. Margaret Hoehn, Dr Yahr created the Hoehn and Yahr scale, one of the most widely used measures of disability of PD today. Dr. Yahr established one of the first NIH supported PD Research Centers in the United States. He recruited and trained some of the world's most pre-eminent investigators in PD, including Dr. Stanley Fahn and Dr. Roger Duvoisin. When Dr. Yahr left to become Chairman of Neurology at Mount Sinai Medical Center in 1973, Dr. Stanley Fahn became the Director of the Division of Movement Disorders. Dr. Fahn, a pioneering clinician-researcher, expanded the scope of the center to include other related disorders that cause abnormal involuntary movements such dystonia. Over the decades, the Center has become a premier clinical and research movement disorders center and has trained over 100 neurologists in PD and other movement disorders. Dr. Fahn co-founded of the principal organizations for the study of PD and related disorders, Parkinson Study Group, The Movement Disorder Society, and co-founded the principal journal in the field, Movement Disorders. Dr. Fahn stepped down as the director of the Division and remains active clinically and academically. As of July 1, 2013, Dr. Un Jung Kang became the new Division Director.
